Small Visitor Attraction of the Year – Silver Award

Small Visitor Attraction of the Year – Silver Award

Telegraph Museum Porthcurno takes Silver at the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2019. The award-winning museum previously won gold at last year’s award ceremony and received recognition again in the countywide competition. Located in the coastal valley of Porthcurno, deep in the South West of Cornwall, the museum was once the largest Telegraph Station in the world. Open as a museum since 1998 the exhibitions tell the story of international communications from the early days of undersea telegraphy to the modern-day fibre optic systems.

A Fantastic Job

Staff and volunteers work throughout the year to preserve historic collections such as the world’s only working telegraphy system, intact Cable Hut and World War Two tunnels. The team combine expertise to provide exhibitions, talks and demonstrations as well as family activities and fun events. The museum is frequently described as ‘Amazing’ and is loved by groups and visitors, young and old.

Award Winning

The award for Small Visitor Attraction of the Year recognises a small business that provides “truly memorable visitor experiences and excellence across every aspect of the business”. Sponsored by Seymac Distribution, the award also demonstrates the museum’s commitment and dedication to high standards of customer service and quality across the whole visit.

Thank You

A huge thank you goes out to the volunteers who started the museum, previously working for Cable and Wireless and being based at the station and Training College. Our volunteers continue the family legacy, maintaining unique working collections and archives as well as supporting the essential job of income generation and fundraising.

Congratulations to fellow nominees Camel Valley Vineyards who took gold and Cornwall Footballgolf who were also awarded silver.
