Wildflower Planting in Porthcurno

Wildflower Planting in Porthcurno

The rain clouds have parted today just in time for our long-awaited wildflower planting as part of the museum’s Planet PK project.

Investing in Nature
A new project is underway, funded by Tevi, a Cornwall initiative which supports economic and environmental growth in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and a donation from Tim and Ruth Cooke. Tevi is a partnership between the University of Exeter, Cornwall Council, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the Cornwall Development Company.

Working with the Eden Project the museum received funding to rewild 4 large areas within the museum’s grounds. The team consisted of staff from the museum and Lucie Oldale, horticultural Scientist (Conservation).

Native Species
The mix of annuals and perennials will thrive according to the local environment and will present an ever-changing display unique to our location.

The combination of flora will bring food for pollinators in the summer and a source of food and habitat for wildlife through autumn into winter. Given that the valley is a coastal location surrounded by farmland this helps to give something back to native species of insects and mammals, as well as our own bee population.

Global Connections
Lucie explained that while all the plant species were native to Cornwall, half the mix of seeds can also be found in Malta, one of the locations of the 1870 Cable to India. This cable route is commemorated in 2020 as the museum prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the telegraph connection.

The beautiful natural displays will include fennel and verbascum and will start to appear in the spring. Visitors are welcome throughout the museum gardens for free, with free parking until 1st April 2020.

Planet PK
Telegraph Museum Porthcurno undergoing a radical change through an environmental programme looking at the future of Porthcurno Valley. Through various partnerships and projects, the museum will be supporting and leading on sustainable tourism and conscientious land management.
