Description

Replica PK Mess Token Keyring

Own your own piece of Porthcurno history with our unique PK Mess Token Keyring.

This specially commissioned replica PK mess token was produced by local Cornish jewellers St Justin Ltd., using a design taken from the original mess token.

The mess token keyrings are made from pewter which is an alloy of 92% tin with copper and antimony to harden it. The items are placed into rubber discs into which the molten metal is poured. Each pewter item passes through many hands from casting to fettling and sanding, before it has a final polish and is packed into a velvet pouch.

Mess tokens such as these were used instead of cash by staff at telegraph stations around the run of the 19th/20th centuries. Similar tokens were used by the military.

As far as we know, the tokens used at Porthcurno were made in 1d, 2d, 3d and 4d denominations. The original in the museum is for 3d, and was found in the grounds.
