Tennis Courts Full of History
Tennis has been a favourite sport of Cable & Wireless staff and students for many years. Across the globe, Cable Stations had tennis courts where the Exiles enjoyed playing, practising, and competing. Since the Porthcurno Telegraph Station was built in 1870, the tennis courts have been a constant feature of Porthcurno. The Porthcurno Telegraph Station, or PK as it became known in telegraphic code, was the most important in the world during the late Victorian era. It was the point at which many submarine telegraph cables—transatlantic and to other locations—came ashore. The Porthcurno Tennis courts offered a vital outlet for the staff and students of the Porthcurno Training College, along with other sports and hobbies. The telegraph station was decommissioned in 1970, but PK Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications preserves its history and legacy to this day.
