National Trust Partnership Working Day

National Trust Partnership Working Day

On Friday 21st February volunteers and staff from the Telegraph Museum Porthcurno and the National Trust will team up as part of The National Trusts Land, Outdoors and Nature Strategy.

The plan is designed to control invasive species at various coastal sites in West Cornwall.

Natural Beauty
Porthcurno valley has a special climate which is the perfect growing environment for sub-tropical species. The museum grounds are a mixture of lawns, beautiful native cultivated areas and wildflower beds, all surrounded by swathes of natural habitat.

Without active control invasive species have the potential to overwhelm the landscape and surrounding habitats. These efforts create greater biodiversity and prevent encroachment onto neighbouring land.

Volunteer Force
Tasks will include, cutting, stacking, dragging, burning, pulling out the native weed Clematis Vitalba and other species which reduce light for other plants and trees.

Simon Hocking, Area Ranger for the National Trust’s West Cornwall and St Levan Sites said, “It’s really rewarding to look back at pictures of Porthcurno before the control work commenced and see the positive changes occurring on the site for flora and fauna.”
