PK Porthcurno Archive Secures Further Funding

We are delighted to announce that PK Porthcurno has been successful in its application to the Archives Resilience Grant, a new fund run by The National Archives. The grant aims to support archives to create sustainable solutions that enable them to respond to and manage change. The funded activity is intended to increase the sector’s ability to safeguard and make accessible significant collections throughout the UK.

PK Porthcurno holds not only a physical archive but also an increasing collection of digital archive material. This includes over 9000 photographs that have been scanned by our dedicated archive volunteers over the last 10 years. We also have a collection of over 400 engineer reports for telegraph cable laying and repair work dating from the 1870s onwards. These were scanned with generous support from Subsea Environmental Services.

Our aim is to improve the preservation, management, and security of PK Porthcurno’s digital archive to ensure it remains accessible. The grant will enable us to increase our storage capacity for digital material, allowing us to continue to digitise our Designated archive and increase access to this outstanding, world-class collection through the PK Online Collection.

Internal access will also be improved, enabling more of the archive to be used for engagement activities and publicity. It will also allow us to continue to accept ‘born digital’ material, so ensuring that the ever-changing story of global communications remains relevant.

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this grant. To know that our digital archive will be preserved and can continue to grow for years to come provides an amazing opportunity to share this incredible collection with the world”.

Charlotte Todd, Head of Collections and Learning, PK Porthcurno.
